Today we held our annual class debate. The motion was 'Primary School Holidays should be as long as Secondary School Holidays.' Aoibhe's team proposed the motion and Tom's team opposed the motion. Congratulations to Jack and Maria on winning the Toastmaster Award for best speaker. The motion was not carried by a very slim margin. Well done everyone!

We have been learning about the life cycle of plants and about the conditions necessary for plant growth. Today we learned how to identify a tree by its leaves. Then we went on a nature walk and identified as many trees as we could! Check out the gallery!

We had a very frosty soccer training session this week but it didn't put us off as we prepare for the Spar 5 a Side. We are also playing lots of chess to hone our skills for Féile Fichille in February.

November and December were amazing months for STEM education in our classroom. During Science week two Professors of Genetics visitied us from UCD and showed us how to extract DNA from raspberries! They also showed us how materials can react with each other, sometimes with explosive results! We were also visited by an ecologist from the Irish Peatland Conservation Council. She explained to us the importance of Irish bogland and we made a 'Bog in a Bottle' to help us understand the structure of a bog. We took part in a Super Science Quiz in the hall too and showed off all we had learned! We also had a STEM poster competition. At the end of November we began to investigate the topic of Sound. We discussed the importance of hearing and tried communicating using the Irish Sign Language alphabet. We also carried out two interesting experiments investigating how sound travels. Finally, in December we investigated mixing and separating materials. Check out the gallery below!

We have started learning about the Renaissance. When Michelangelo painted the Sistine Chapel he built a scaffold and painted lying down. We tried out the same technique while listening to the beautiful music of the Renaissance composer Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina. Click play to watch!
