Congratulations to the winners of our end of year Chess Tournament!
We had a class debate today. Mikey's team proposed the motion that homework should banned at primary school level and Ciara's team opposed the motion. It was extremely close with engaging arguments from both sides. Tom and Aoibhe won the Toastmaster Award for fifth class and Mikey and Ciara won the Toastmaster Award for sixth class. In the end the motion was not carried. Click through the slideshow to see some photos.

Educational Tour to Dublin
In recent weeks during SESE lessons we have been learning about the classification of living things in science. In geography we are studying our local natural environment and in history we have started learning about Ireland's road to independence and in particular the 1916 Rising. To support these fascinating topics we took a trip to the Witness History Tour in the GPO and we visited the Natural History Museum. We even managed to squeeze in a picnic and playground stop in Merrion Square!
WINNER ALRIGHT!We had a fantastic time at Fairyhouse Racecourse for Horse Racing Ireland's Junior Day.

Féile Fichille FinalsCongratulations to our chess team who qualified for the Féile Fichille invitational today based on their 2nd placing in the preliminary round a few weeks ago. Each child played six games and everyone did really well in a tough competition. The chess arbiter challenged us all to teach chess to one person in our lives who cannot play so that will be our mission in term three!

Basketball BlitzToday we put all the skills we have learned over the past few weeks to the test in our senior school basketball blitz. 8 teams played against each other in the morning in the group stage of the competition and after lunch we progresed to the knock out stage. There were some unbelievably close matches in the knock out phase with one quarter final being decided by a final second basket and one semi final coming down to a free throw shoot out . In the end the Rockets team of Ross, Grace, Niall, James Mc, Maria and Lillian narrowly beat the Knicks team of Conor R, Ciara, Felicia, Ben, Jack, Emma K and Juliette by one single point!

In geography and science we are learning about the periodic table of elements, states of matter and volcanoes! In history we read the ancient Aztec myth of warrior Popocatépetl and Princess Iztaccíhuatl. When the warrior and his beloved princess died of broken hearts the Aztecs believed they transformed into volcanoes! We are constructing papier maché volcanoes during art lessons and we will be conducting an eruption experiment in February!
Bah Humbug!
Preparations for our Christmas production 'Bah Humbug' are going very well.
This week we have been trying to get our set designed! It's a big job.

Turning of the Sod at Windmill Hill
Ms. O'Connor, Aisling, Aine & Daniel from 6th class recently attended the turning of the sod for the new Windmill Hill Resevoir and Trunk Watermain. The ceremony to mark the commencement of the works was led by the Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage, Darragh O’Brien TD and supported by Cathaoirleach of Meath County Council, Councillor Nick Killian. Also in attendance was Minister for Justice Helen McEntee, Minister of State for European Affairs, Thomas Byrne, local TD Darren O’Rourke, and Senator Sharon Keogan and representatives from Irish Water and Meath County Council, as well as local Councillors from Ashbourne and Ratoath municipal district and members of the of the local business community. We were delighted to play a central role in the launching project. We hope that this project that will provide a more reliable water supply for people in Curragha, Ratoath and Ashbourne.
We are really enjoying the FIFA World Cup. We researched facts about all the competing nations. We had a sweep with all the other classes in school and we completed mini projects on the 8 countries we drew! Sadly with Spain being eliminated we became the first class to crash out of the sweep! However we have had an amazing few weeks playing in a soccer blitz. Congratulations to the yellow team who beat the green team in the grand final!!
The rain was pouring down as we arrived at Trinity Sports Ground, Santry for the annual Brother Cross Country event. This event has not taken place since 2019 due to Covid restrictions and we were all very excited to be back in Santry again. Schools from all over the country were in attendance and 41 intrepid runners from 4th, 5th and 6th classes lined up in the challenging conditions to represent our school. There were phenomenal performances all round and personal bests beaten by many in fields of well over 150 runners. Special mention to Emily (fifth class) who took gold, Anna May (fourth class) who took bronze and to Aoibhinn (fifth class) and Hannah (fourth class) who both finished 6th in their races. Our school is a true minnow compared to some of the big schools who competed and we are bursting with pride at the performance of every single one of our athletes! Peace is the Prize
28 of our senior school pupils gave up their time to come back to school from 4.30 - 5.00pm today to join a Zoom call to launch World Peace Sports Day. Along with another Irish school in Ballina, Co. Mayo we were the first in the world to take part in this event and we spoke live to the founder of World Peace Sports Day Derek Peaple in the UK. We recorded a message of peace which will be sent around the world to different schools passing the baton from country to country to say that 'WE'RE IN FOR PEACE'. Famous celebrities such as Brian O'Driscoll and Paula Radcliffe sent messages to us to say that they support the campaign. The campaign directors have an appointment at The Vatican on the 29th and 30th September when they will sign a document for Peace in the presence of His Holiness, Pope Francis. We look forward to our World Peace Sports Day this Friday when we will wear blue and yellow to school and raise funds for Ukraine.
